Ethical codes and standards provide the moral compass for any Democratic society and its representatives. In a Democracy, it is essential to uphold the principles of fairness, justice and equality for all citizens. Elected and appointed officials are expected to follow and maintain these fundamental values and principles in place to help guide their behavior. Ethical behavior by elected officials, public servants, and citizens helps build trust and faith in the democratic process. Ethical codes and standards ensure that those in power are held responsible for their actions and decisions, and that the government operates in the best interest of THE PEOPLE. Upholding high ethical standards helps prevent the abuse of power, bribery, and unethical practices that erode public trust. On every level of government, Ethics are being circumvented for personal greed and/or to further undemocratic agendas. Locally, some elected and appointed officials have chosen to ignore certain ethical standards and conflicts of interest resulting in affiliated anarchist occupying several different governmental positions and even holding a majority vote on the Eureka City Council. After several public allegations of ethical violations and conflicts of interest committed by elected and appointed officials, the Eureka City Council voted to 'rescind' the City Ethics Code passed in 2018, calling it 'problematic.' CRDV will be the local watch dog and advocate for our community that expects and deserves ethical behavior and accountability from all public officials.
