GLOSSARY - SOLIDARITY ECONOMY

The core principles of a Solidarity Economy originated with Spanish  anarchist writer Felipe Alaiz around 1937 and seeks to 'dismantle' the free market economy alongside capitalism, while simultaneously  implementing this undemocratic communist agenda. The solidarity economy  aims to abolish all private property while exclusively supporting social  ownership of property, goods and services. Anarchy-communist have embraced the potential of transitioning our local economy to what they  consider a more 'communal' approach to social and economic inequalities. With its emphasis on collective decision-making and shared resources, the solidarity economy poses a great threat to the  individual autonomy and freedom of choice that has been championed by  the free-market economy and capitalism.  Such an economic system attempts to limit personal preferences and competition in favor of  prioritizing collective interest. By promoting communal ownership and resource sharing, the solidarity economy restricts the ability of individuals to make independent economic decisions or pursue their own entrepreneurial endeavors.  This type of communistic economy focuses on  local and community-based initiatives that will certainly lead to a 'dismantling' or fragmentation of democratic governance structures. The  decentralization of decision-making power, which is a key aspect of the solidarity economy, will result in a lack of coordination and ethical  accountability at a local and broader societal level. This agenda has  and will continue to weaken our democratic institutions and hinder effective governance in our local community and beyond.
